Located right along the Mason Dixon Line, Pen Mar is said to be in Maryland on some maps, and Pennsylvania on others. This park features a road to High Rock @ 2000 ft which has a 2-story observatory with tower. Mt. Quirauk, 2 miles down the road @ 2400 ft features a 90 ft observatory offering a view of 22 counties in 4 states! There is no camping in the park. Devils Racecourse is a standard 3-sided shelter located near the bottom of South Mountain. Ammenities include a privy, stream, and firering. Behind the shelter is a rock field known as Devils Racecourse which formed from the glaciers moving through the area in the past. The formation is as wild to photograph as it is to play around on! There are no immediate surrounding tent sites. At the top of the mountain, just after leaving the A.T., there is a large tent site with fire ring, but access to fresh water involves a decent hike down the mountain to the shelter and stream.

Ensign Cowall Shelter is located only a few yards off of the Appalachian Trail, and a short walk from a country road. The shelter is taller than most shelters, providing tiered bunks and hooks for hanging gear and food bags. A stream is located nearby (0.2 mi south on the A.T. for fresh water, and a privy is not too far either. There is ample tent space near the shelter for groups. There is also a very nice firering.

East of the trail, this primitive campsite has a spring that is located 30 yards down a blue-blazed trail to the west.
Annapolis Rocks Campsite @ 39° 33' 38.97", 77° 36' 2.07"W

Located along a blue-blazed trail 0.25 miles off of the Appalachian Trail, Annapolis Rocks a favorite stop for backpackers, campers, climbers, view seekers, and day trippers alike. The cliffs provide plentiful opportunities for rock climbing, while those less adventurous can sit down and enjoy a meal to the beautiful panaramic view of the Cumberland valley below. The side trail is located 2.2 miles North bound on the A.T. from the parking lot at Route 40 and makes for an easy day hike, and favorite camping spot due to its view, easy access, and ice cold stream. Backpackers are greeted by spacious tent sites, composting privies (cleaner and less smelly than traditional privies), and a reliable stream to refill their water supplies. There are NO FIRES allowed at Annapolis Rocks.

Situated at the bottom of South Mountain, near Route 40 and Interstate 70, Pine Knob is a standard 3-sided shelter complete with privy and stream nearby. The site features tend sites, and is a short walk from the A.T. The wooded setting provides a serene backdrop, but due to proximity to I-70, there is some road noise.

This quaint, historic town features museums, battlefields, trails, and exhibits. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the headquarters for the Appalachian Trail, is located just a quarter mile off the trail in Harpers Ferry.
